Fatigue and Weight Gain After 35: Is It More Than Just Diet and Exercise?
If you’re ready to get your body and health back in balance after feeling out of answers… I know exactly how that feels.
My Own Journey: From Fit to Fatigued
There was a time in my life when I was doing all the “right” things to be in the best shape of my life. Yet, some days – okay most days – I could barely drag myself out of bed.
Coming back from my Monday run, my legs felt like lead. It took every last drop of energy to climb up the stairs to my shower. (Some days I was even too tired to shower.)
And it didn’t help that I was putting on extra weight at a rate that seemed like a pound a minute.
I didn’t feel like my usual super-fit self and I couldn’t figure out why. Nor could my docs. They even told me I was fine. (Ugh. As if that was helpful to hear.)
What had worked in the past was no longer working. And no one had any real answers for me.
Mainstream thinking at the time was all (and often still is):
- Eat less and exercise more.
- Go low carb with paleo or keto.
- Low-fat and plant-based is key!
- Fasting is the way!
- HIIT or strength training will do it!
My health funk was not just affecting my inner and outer self – my energy, mind, mood, and appearance.
It was also affecting my work, my relationships, my impact, my dreams, my legacy.
Clutching to get my life and self back, I tried all the things.
And while some of those things might have helped for a hot minute…
despite the popular advice, my symptoms and overall health were getting worse.

It’s Not About Restricting, It’s About Nourishing
Low carb, keto, low fat, HIIT, plant-based, eat less and exercise more… Some of those things work just fine for some people. It might have even worked or still works for you – and that’s wonderful.
The thing is, it didn’t work for me at the time because my body was stressed out. It had been going on for so long, I didn’t even recognize it.
“Eat less and exercise more” thinking had led me to a physical state of being overworked and undernourished.
I felt depleted because I was depleted.
Adding more exercise to my already active life just depleted me even more.
Restricting calories or food groups created an even greater depletion of nutrients that my overworked and undernourished body needed.
The extra weight was my body’s personal response to elevated physical and physiological stress.
Understanding the Blood Sugar Stress Cycle
High levels of stress disrupt blood sugar levels which contributes to keeping the body in a stress cycle – where nothing seems to work.
That’s when eating less and exercising more – or depleting your body of nutrients it needs – can lead to more stress and poorer health.
While it doesn’t always happen that way for everyone, it very well can.
A woman’s shifting hormonal landscape – especially after 35 – can make her even more susceptible to this type of stress response.
It’s what I call the blood-sugar-stress cycle.
The good news?
Once you figure out how to shift your body’s response and give it what it needs to regain balance, it’s reversible!
How about you?
Have you ever felt like the harder you try to bring your body back into balance and back to its healthiest state the harder it is, or the further away you get?
If so, you’re certainly not alone.
